Currently, up to 40% of Emergency Department (ED) visits among youth (up to age 18) are for non-urgent mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and maladaptive behaviors. This R01 grant funds the testing of navigator models designed to safely divert these non-urgent visits into community-based care settings.

Scope

The primary objective of this R01 clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness, implementation, and sustainability of “navigator” models. These programs aim to guide patients away from the ED by circumventing traditional barriers to congested mental health service systems. Funded studies will examine culturally relevant approaches to reduce health disparities, assess the supervisory needs of navigators, and optimize care coordination from the ED to the community.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to a broad range of U.S.-based entities, including higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local/state governments, and independent school districts capable of conducting clinical trials.

Partnership

Collaborations between academic researchers, emergency department clinical staff, and community mental health organizations are strongly encouraged to ensure successful scale-up, adoption, and transition of care.

Deadlines: Multiple receipt dates apply, following the standard NIH R01 cycles.

Requires an R01 Clinical Trial mechanism.

Must focus entirely on youth up to 18 years of age.

Must identify a set of research-informed strategies to improve care coordination.

Proposals must ethically address informed consent and assent processes.

More info : https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-25-289.html

Stay updated on the latest health tech funding: https://newsletter.livi.health/signup

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has released a critical funding opportunity designed to address a growing crisis in pediatric health.
