The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has announced a significant funding opportunity for Cycle 1 2027. This $12 million funding initiative focuses on utilizing digital health technologies (DHTs) to advance high-impact, patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER).
Scope
As digital health tools become increasingly embedded in US healthcare delivery, critical clinical challenges remain in integrating patient-generated health data into routine clinical workflows. Furthermore, profound gaps in DHT access and uptake persist across varying age groups, income levels, digital literacy, disability statuses, and rural environments. This funding announcement supports proposals that investigate patient-centered CER questions to bridge these evidence gaps and improve health equity.
Eligibility
Applicants must ensure their proposed projects meet rigorous standards and focus strictly on patient-centered clinical outcomes. Eligible research projects can receive up to $12 million in direct costs over a maximum duration of five years, although shorter study timelines are highly encouraged.
- Proposals must include established evidence of efficacy or widespread use for a specific digital health technology.
- Product development for the targeted DHT must be fully complete prior to application submission.
- Primary study outcomes must center exclusively on patient-centered clinical outcomes.
Partnership
In line with PCORI’s overarching mission, successful applicants will demonstrate robust engagement and partnership with patients and relevant healthcare stakeholders throughout the entire research process. Collaborations across healthcare systems, community organizations, and academic institutions are strongly encouraged to ensure the research is grounded in the real-world experiences of patients.
Deadlines: The funding announcement opens on November 17, 2026. The Letter of Intent (LOI) is due by January 6, 2027, and full applications (by invitation only) are due on May 4, 2027.
